Stop reading your books. Start listening.
Open any PDF and press play. Halo Reader reads it aloud in a natural voice, with the screen off, in bed, in the car or at the gym. It runs entirely on your phone, so it works offline and your books stay private.
The free version reads the first 2 minutes of any book, so you can hear it work on your phone. No account, no subscription.

This is the actual voice.
Made by the app's own voice engine from the opening of Pride and Prejudice. Nothing was edited.

Made for listening to whole books.
27 natural voices
British and American, men and women. Choose the one you could happily listen to for hours.
Works offline
The voice lives inside the app, so it reads on a plane or with no data, and costs you nothing per book.
Your books stay yours
The app doesn't even have permission to use the internet. Nothing you read can leave your phone.
Skips the clutter
Page numbers, running headers and contents pages are left out, and sentences carry on across page breaks.
Built for bedtime
Plays with the screen off, works with lock-screen and headphone controls, and a sleep timer fades it out gently.
Follow along
The current sentence is highlighted. Tap any sentence to read from there, or jump by chapter. It remembers your place in every book.

Got a PDF on WhatsApp? Just open it.
Choose Halo Reader when you open a PDF from WhatsApp, email or your files, or pick one inside the app. Set the speed from 0.8× to 2× and it changes instantly, with no chipmunk effect.
Three steps, about five minutes.
Download it on your phone
Tap Download free on your Android phone. It's about 250 MB because the voice is inside, so use Wi-Fi if you can.
Allow the install
Halo Reader comes from this website, not the Play Store, so Android asks first. Allow your browser to install it. If Play Protect warns you about an unknown app, tap More details, then Install anyway.
Open a PDF and press play
The voice takes a few seconds to wake up the first time. After that, just listen.

FAQ
Which phones does it work on?
Android 8 or newer on a 64-bit phone, with about 1 GB of free space. The voice is created on the phone itself, so newer phones do best. On older phones it may pause now and then to catch up, which is why you should try the free version on your own phone first.
What does the free version include?
Everything, for about the first 2 minutes of each book. Buy once and every book plays to the end.
Why isn't it on the Play Store?
We sell it directly from this website. That's why Android asks you to allow the install. Your download comes straight from us.
Does it work on iPhone?
Not at the moment. Halo Reader is Android only.
Will it read a scanned PDF?
Not yet. It needs a PDF with real text in it, the kind where you can select the words. A scan is just pictures of pages, and the app will tell you if that's what you've opened. Password-locked PDFs need the password removed first.
Which languages does it read?
English only for now.
Does it ever mispronounce words?
Sometimes, mostly with unusual names. It knows hundreds of thousands of words, including Bible names, and it sounds out the ones it doesn't know instead of skipping them.
Is my book uploaded anywhere?
Never. The app has no internet permission at all, so everything stays on your phone.
I lost my licence key.
No problem. Get it emailed to you again.
